Why capable candidates fail selection
Understanding where candidates go wrong is the first step to preparing properly. Most failures at AOSB are preventable with the right preparation system, honest feedback, and structured support.
The Core Problem
Candidates mainly fail AOSB because they arrive unprepared for the pressure, pace and precision required to demonstrate their leadership potential under observation.
01
UNDERESTIMATING THE STANDARD
Many candidates assume AOSB is similar to civilian job interviews. It is not. The assessment standard is structured, unforgiving, and designed to expose weaknesses.
02
GENERIC PREPARATION
YouTube videos and online forums provide surface-level advice. They cannot tailor preparation to your strengths, weaknesses, or the specific demands of your target regiment.
03
MISUNDERSTANDING LEADERSHIP
Candidates confuse authority with leadership. AOSB assessors look for decision-making, adaptability, and composure—not loud voices or forced confidence.
PRESSURE BREAKDOWN
AOSB deliberately creates stress. Candidates who have never trained under pressure freeze, rush decisions, or lose clarity when it matters most. The environment is designed to reveal how you respond when composure is tested.
04
05
NO FEEDBACK LOOP
Without external observation, candidates repeat the same mistakes. They cannot see what assessors see or correct behaviours that undermine their performance.
06
NO REAL INTERVIEW PRACTICE
Reading about interviews is not the same as experiencing them. Most candidates arrive having never practised under realistic conditions with honest feedback.
The Result?
Capable candidates fail not because they lack potential, but because they arrive unprepared for what AOSB actually demands.
The system is designed to reveal weaknesses. Without structured preparation, honest feedback, and exposure to realistic pressure, those weaknesses will determine the outcome.

Former officers observe your performance and provide direct, actionable feedback. You learn what assessors see and how to correct weaknesses before AOSB.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to join the Future Leader Academy?
We work with candidates at every stage of the Army Officer application process.
Some people join right at the start to understand the process and build strong habits early. Others join when they’re preparing for Briefing or Main Board.
If you’re serious about joining the Army and hope to start within the next couple of years, we’d recommend getting started sooner rather than later. The earlier you begin preparing, the more time you have to develop before selection.
How are the online workshops delivered?
Our workshops are delivered live online by experienced coaches.
They’re designed to be interactive and practical, not lectures. You’ll be encouraged to get involved, ask questions, practice key skills and learn from both the coaches and other candidates.
We run two workshops each week, usually on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 18:30. The same session is delivered twice, so you only need to attend one each week.
How is the fitness programme delivered?
The fitness programme is delivered through an easy-to-use training app.
Every session includes clear instructions, coaching notes, and demonstration videos so you know exactly what to do and why you’re doing it.
The programme is built around the key areas needed for military preparation, including running, strength, conditioning and overall fitness. You can also fit the sessions around your work, university or other commitments.
Do you only work with people applying to the Army?
No. While most of our candidates are preparing for Army Officer Selection, we also support people applying to the RAF, Royal Navy, Royal Marines, Army Reserve, Professionally Qualified Officers, and other military leadership pathways.
Although every selection process is slightly different, they all assess similar qualities such as leadership, communication, confidence, teamwork and decision-making.
How much time do I need to commit each week?
This depends on your current level and how close you are to selection.
As a guide, you’ll complete your fitness training, attend one live workshop each week and spend some additional time preparing through reading, current affairs and personal development.
The candidates who get the most from the programme are usually the ones who make preparation part of their weekly routine.
Will this guarantee I pass AOSB?
No, anyone who guarantees a pass is being unrealistic.
Army Officer Selection is competitive, and the final decision is made by the assessors on the day. What we can do is help you understand what’s expected, improve the areas you can control and arrive at selection feeling confident, prepared and ready to perform at your best.
